Who We Are

EXPORTech Company, Inc. (ETCi) is a leader in developing unique magnetic separation technologies for license or sale to the coal, industrial minerals and petrochemical industries. These technologies include:

  • the MagMill for pre-combustion dry coal cleaning at the power plant,

  • the Magnetic Micro-Particle Continuous Separator for removal of nano-sized particles from viscous flows,

  • the VacuMag separator for recovery of magnetite from fly ash,

  • the ElectriMag and ParaMag separators for processing coal, lignite and other minerals,

  • the MagneCoal separator for breaking emulsions, and

  • the Modified Air Jig for dry coal cleaning.

Background

EXPORTech Company, Inc. was founded in 1982 as a research company to develop practical innovative magnetic separation technologies for sale or license to the coal, industrial minerals and petrochemical industries.  Funding for ETCi's research has come from the SBIR program and other competitive solicitations from the U.S. Department of Energy, the National Science Foundation, NASA, the Pennsylvania Energy Development Authority, the Western Pennsylvania Ben Franklin Challenge Grant program, the Electric Power Research Institute, electric utilities, coal companies, and a variety of other industrial clients.

ETCi's experience includes wet and dry magnetic separation of coal and fly ash, industrial minerals including kaolin clay and nickel, lunar materials brought back to Earth on the Apollo 11, 16 and 17 missions, Fischer-Tropsch catalyst separation, and fine particle and liquid-liquid separations using electrostatic and magnetostatic coalescence. The company holds ten US patents, three foreign patents, and has several patents pending.

In 2006 ETCi formed a joint venture with MobotecUSA to create MagMill Co. LLC whose mission is to commercialize the MagMill.  In December, 2007, Mobotec was purchased by Nalco, making Nalco a part owner of MagMill LLC.  For more information visit the MagMill LLC web site.

A major developer of coal-to-liquids technology has taken a non-exclusive license to test ETCi's magnetic method for separating catalysts from Fischer-Tropsch wax.  For information on this and other licensing opportunities, contact Dr. Robin Oder at roder@magneticseparation.com or 412-573-0191.

The company is located in Plum, PA, a suburb of Pittsburgh, where it occupies office and high bay area laboratory space.
